Tools

Tools are implements and portable workstations. A tool is not worn gear and is not spent by using it, and it earns its place by making work possible or easier.

Workspaces

Working at a proper station grants advantage on that trade's craft roll, meaning two dice with the highest kept. A station also cancels out working conditions that would otherwise put the roll at a disadvantage.

A station you carry counts the same as the room you stand in, so a forge in your pack serves Crafting like the smithy you walk into, and a camp stove serves Cooking like a kitchen. When the advantage applies, the roll says so. There is no penalty for working rough, because the station is a bonus rather than a requirement, as described on Workspaces.

Tool kits

A kit or other tool grants advantage on a skill check when your attempt names it and you carry it in your pack or have it equipped. Each tool helps only the skills it suits, such as a Climber's Kit on an Athletics check to climb, and the roll card shows the tool you are using. Tools never grant this advantage on Crafting, Potions or Arcana rolls.

Tools on the belt

A tool small enough to hang from a belt can sit in a belt slot, where the item effect it carries is active for as long as it stays there. Anything larger works from your pack instead.
