Bosses
A boss is a major encounter, a single named creature rather than one of many, and each holds signature items that exist nowhere else in the world. No merchant stocks them and they never turn up as ordinary loot, so killing the boss is the only way to take them.
Several signature drops are materials rather than finished gear, and those are crafted into a matching piece, as described on each item page.
This page names the bosses already known, while many others go unnamed here, and those are yours to find in play.
Phases
Bosses fight in phases. When a boss is hurt past a threshold it changes form, takes on a new set of attacks, and spends the rest of its turn on the change. A hit that reaches a phase stops there, so no single blow can skip a phase or kill a boss through one. Some bosses heal back to full health as they enter a new phase while others carry their wounds into it, and some change form when a particular character dies. A boss you leave alone returns to its first form once it has fully recovered.
Some phases are triggered by events and items rather than by the boss's health.
Home ground
Some bosses are bound to their home ground, a set of places around their lair that is usually far wider than the spot where you fight them. A bound boss never leaves its home ground, so it will not follow you once you travel beyond it, and you never meet it anywhere else. Most bound bosses are gargantuan or waterborne creatures, and a few keep to a smaller range where that suits them, while humanoid and regular-sized bosses move freely.
