Encumbrance is the weight of what you carry measured against what you can bear. Every item has a weight, your carrying capacity sets the line, and staying under it costs you nothing.
The stages
| State | When | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Unencumbered | Carried weight below your capacity | No penalties |
| Encumbered | At or above your capacity | Halves your movement and lowers Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution by 2 |
| Heavily encumbered | At or above one and a half times your capacity | Slows you to a crawl and lowers Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution by 6 |
The burden shows as a status that lasts while the weight does, as described on Status effects.
Managing the load
Carrying capacity can be raised by gear, since it rolls as an affix on the body and back slots, as described on Equipment. Coin, crafting materials, and reagents keep to a pouch of their own and take no inventory space, though their weight still counts. Anything you stash in a chest or a vault stops weighing on you and keeps for good, as described on Loot.
